Job Description

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer shall contribute to new product development and support of legacy products for Endress+Hauser Optical Analysis, Inc., analytical instruments through design, product improvement and documentation. The ideal candidate will have experience designing mechanical and opto-mechanical components and subsystems for precision instruments, creating and releasing new drawings of parts and assemblies, and performing detailed documentation with minimal supervision based upon engineering principles and best industry practices for precision instruments.

Role + Responsibilities

We are actively seeking a skilled Opto-Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in both optical and mechanical engineering. In this role, you will play an integral part in our team, contributing to the design and development of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) spectrometers and analyzers. Your expertise will be crucial in creating robust opto-mechanical assemblies that perform reliably across diverse environmental conditions. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess basic knowledge of electronics typical of precision instrumentation and understand how to integrate them into opto-mechanical systems.

Essential functions include:

  • Design optics and mechanics for precision positioning in spectrometers, considering the material properties of optical elements, metalwork, and adhesives under varying environmental conditions for robustness.
  • Utilize simulation tools to optimize and iterate designs before producing parts.
  • Perform stack up and tolerance analysis to ensure the fit and function of assemblies under worst-case conditions.
  • Build and test prototypes of designs, ensuring the functionality and efficiency of the product before production.
  • System integration of opto-mechanical, electronic, and off-the-shelf parts related to spectrometers and sample conditioning systems in TDLAS analyzers.
  • Generate detailed fabrication and assembly drawings, BoM's, inspection documents, and related documentation.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to create and interpret technical drawings.
  • Document designs for production through drawings and work instructions, ensuring clear and accurate communication of design specifications.
  • Execute engineering change orders.
  • Lead and/or collaborate on engineering projects, coordinating with other team members to ensure project success.
  • Troubleshoot issues with existing products by identifying and resolving problems.

Qualification + Profile

  • Education: BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience with design and development of precision optical and mechanical instrumentation.
  • Expert-level CAD user.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools for structural and optical analysis, including SOLIDWORKS Simulation and the Ansys suite of tools including Zemax OpticStudio.
  • Understanding of machining and sheet metal fabrication processes to design manufacturable parts, with particular emphasis on stainless steel and aluminum alloys.
  • Understanding of 3D printing technologies and materials.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T principles
  • Strong knowledge of standard engineering documentation procedures (e.g. EOs, ECNs, etc.)
  • Candidate should be a self-starter, possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.

Desired Experience:

  • Familiarity with general electrical and laser safety standards for industrial instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with hazardous area classifications and certifications related to industrial instrumentation.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Solid Edge, and/or PTC Creo CAD software.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM, Agile PLM, and Syteline / SAP ERP systems.
  • Experience with CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) use and programming.

Benefits + Perks

  • The security of working for an international family-owned company
  • Tuition reimbursement and a wide range of development opportunities
  • Comprehensive benefits package which includes medical, dental and vision
  • Company-paid Caregiver and Parental Leave
  • Competitive compensation and bonus opportunities
  • Generous paid time off
  • Life insurance and 401(k) savings with company match

Salary range: $90K - $115K depending on experience
