POSITION DESCRIPTION UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region. Position Summary Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs (Arts & Education), the Director of Teacher Education (Continuing Educator) is responsible for the development and implementation of innovative professional programs and outreach designed to build upon and extend UCLA Extension's reputation as an educational leader in Los Angeles and beyond. The incumbent is responsible for the continued oversight of self-supporting K-12 teacher credentialing programs and is expected to initiate and grow new programming by monitoring emerging education and market opportunities, tracking policy and legislative trends, developing strong relationships with K-12 school partners, maintaining productive and collaborative connections with key campus partners, identifying grant opportunities and new revenue sources, and introducing creative new programs, certificates, and professional development programming. The incumbent assumes academic and administrative responsibility for the development, implementation, marketing, fiscal management, ongoing evaluation, and supervision of teacher education programs. The role requires representing UCLA Extension through a number of regional networks and professional associations related to the education field as well as direct interaction with a variety of agencies that include: The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies (SEIS), Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the Los Angeles County Office of Education, charter school organizations, and community, business, and government organizations. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean, the incumbent is responsible for the administration of a self- supporting cost center that currently generates approximately $1M annually and 1,500 enrollments. The incumbent coordinates and facilitates California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) accreditation activities related to their portfolio. The incumbent serves as a member of continuing and ad hoc committees and task forces convened at the discretion of the Dean's Office and represents Extension on select campus committees. In efforts to expand and reach underserved communities, responsibilities will include statewide and local outreach efforts. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate steady leadership, a deep understanding of the fields of teacher and community education, outstanding interpersonal, communication, and managerial skill working with diverse constituencies, and enthusiasm for UCLA Extension's public service and educational mission. Please Note This is a "non-academic senate" term appointment where this position shall serve a 2-year term, with the possibility for renewal after completion of the initial appointment term. Core Responsibilities Academic Program Responsibilities Provide academic oversight and management for course offerings with approximately 1,500 annual total enrollments, and approximately $1 million in annual revenue. Propose and coordinate the development of new courses and programs in response to changing and emerging continuing education needs, certification requirements, legislative and policy opportunities, and trends statewide and nationally. Develop new networks and strategies to reach and support underserved communities locally and throughout the state. Assess new trends and the changing educational needs of educational professional and local, regional, and country school districts. Provide oversight for planning professional development programs, courses, seminars and conferences throughout the Greater Los Angeles community and, in some cases, statewide. Coordinate regular programmatic reviews of courses and certificates in accordance with UCLA Extension policy and procedure. Propose and coordinate revisions to programs as needed. Develop, implement and maintain continuous improvement plans and evaluation metrics for all continuing education programs, including current content, AEDI (Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) strategies in teaching, instructor development, and routine data collection from stakeholders (students, instructors, employers, Advisory Boards) to evaluate progress. Direct and manage certificate programs in accordance with the requirements of UC statewide, the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), as well as UCLA Extension Certificate Program policies and standards. Oversee student admission and enrollment. Resolve escalated student issues in accordance with UCLA Extension policy and accreditation guidelines. Maintain teacher preparation programs in accordance with CCTC requirements and standards, including appropriate data collection, data analysis, and data archiving. Develop and implement established procedures for maintaining the quality of all continuing education programs, conference/seminar offerings and special programs. Instructor Recruitment, Development, & Management Build positive and productive relationships with K-12 teacher networks and other sources of instructional talent and development. Recruit, assist in the selection, orient, evaluate, and supervise a diverse group of qualified instructors and mentors for courses and programs, including instructors with a deep understanding of the communities they expect to teach and who are familiar with research on AEDI. Regularly and consistently evaluate instructor performance and provide supervision consistent with meeting departmental and institutional quality, AEDI, and enrollment goals. Marketing & Promotion Identify new trends, changing educational needs, career trajectories, and credentialing requirements for a wide variety of educational communities served by UCLA. Coordinate the planning, promotion, and marketing of educational programs, courses, professional development opportunities, public lectures or workshops, and conferences throughout the state to meet those needs. Coordinate and organize program/unit promotional and outreach events. Work with the Marketing Department and departmental staff on the development of innovative marketing strategies, marketing evaluation, and metric analysis. Assist in preparing content and creation of marketing assets. Budget & Financial Management Develop, implement, analyze, and manage a budget of approximately $1 million with a goal of revenue growth and fiscal viability. Manage fiscal controls, expenditures, and financial/cost analysis for the unit, to ensure achievement of budgetary goals. Participate in the establishment, planning, and organization of long-term strategic enrollment and financial goals for the unit. Work on other special projects as assigned or identified by the Dean's Office at UCLA Extension. External Relations Monitor and coordinate California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) accreditation activities including develop, implement, and maintain program surveys and measures; collect and analyze data; share data to campus partners; compose required reports requested for accreditation by Extension or campus partners; and keep abreast of all CTC and other legislative updates pertaining to teaching credentials. Develop and maintain positive and productive collaboration with UCLA SE&IS faculty and administration and with the UCLA Committee on Accredited Programs (UCAP) and SE&IS Committee on Degrees and Academic Standing (CDAS). Expand partnerships with local school districts, charter school organizations, the UCLA community, regional networks, and other agencies that seek collaboration. Convene and coordinate advisory board meetings for assigned certificate programs. Attend local and regional university network and K-12 professional association meetings and events likely to facilitate program growth. Experience in educational accreditation activities e.g. CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and WASC accreditation. CA teaching credential and experience in teaching and/or administration in K-12 as well as teacher preparation and professional development required. Knowledge of CCTC credentialing processes and experience in program standards, new credential proposal submissions, and accreditation is required. Active and positive relationships with school districts, charter school organizations, county offices of education, regional networks, and CTC. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills are required. Experience with, outreach to, and programming supports for, underserved communities and students. Experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation of continuing education and professional development programs in the field of Education Ability to develop creative continuing education programs within an entrepreneurial framework in response to changing needs and trends in the field of Education. Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills with an ability to relate as peer to faculty, professional associations, community leadership groups, local district, county, and state personnel, and University Extension colleagues. Specific strengths in building partnerships among constituent groups required. Experience in an academic environment and local, county, and regional school districts and organizations. Knowledge and facility with computers, leading word processing and financial management software within an electronic network office environment. Skilful at reading and understanding dense information, writing reports and creating explanatory presentations. Experience in report writing, proposal, and grant writing. (Preferred) Experience or understanding of distance learning methods and techniques for adult education using online learning formats. Ability to use multimedia software and tools in the development of online courses and formats. Ability to work successfully with a highly diverse staff and student population. Active and positive relationships with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. (Preferred) A clear CA K-12 teaching credential and teaching experience. (Preferred) Experience in developing, implementing, maintaining, and analyzing educational program assessments.
