Your Role
The Premier Underwriting team manages the pricing of medical, dental, vision, and life products for employer groups over 3,000 subscribers and all size Labor and Trust groups. The Premier UW Consultant will report to the Senior Manager of Premier, Northern California. In this role you will be assigned and responsible for a renewal book of at least $100M in annual revenue to execute rating targets and strategic discussions. In addition, you will develop executive level presentations/strategy and recommendations for larger complex rating proposals.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Integrate competitor's rating, pricing practices, provider's networks in new business and renewal pricing analytics
- Analyze customer specific financial condition, employee demographics and past claim experience to determine degree of risk, benefits and rates for large complex plan sponsors
- In partnership with the sales team, develop proposed rating position and benefit offering strategies while balancing growth and profitability objectives
- Perform complex modeling including utilization data, COHC, shared risk projections on new business prospects to optimize competitive offers
- Provide advice on underwriting principles and techniques to other departments and functions including senior management
- Assess cost of healthcare risks for both new business and renewals by using multi-year data and actuarial tools across multiple funding arrangements
- Apply actuarial pricing tools to customer specific utilization while balancing multiple strategies, market competitiveness, membership, and profitability goals
- Identifies and researches risk issues and proposes strategy to resolve issue to management for consideration
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Requires a college degree in a related field such as finance, mathematics or accounting and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Requires at least 7 years of prior relevant experience
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Requires deep knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience
- Strong work ethic and self-motivated
- Ability to change financial projections based on data driven information to allow expedient decision-making
- Be able to train, price and have in-depth knowledge of complex funding arrangements (fully insured, self-funded arrangement and specialty (dental, vision & life)
- Advanced communication and consultative skills
Pay Range: The pay range for this role is $109,120.00 to $163,680.00 for California.
Note: Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.
