Summary:

The Peer Navigator will support LGBTQ+ youth and navigate sensitive issues that disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, including health/medical/psychological/psychiatric concerns; coordinate immediate support/services to LGBTQ+ youth in crisis, including during the coming out process; provide parent support and affirming parenting skills coaching; help parents or legal guardians structure positive time with their child(ren); plan affirming family activities; complete reports; maintain records; and provide services in the primary language of the children, youth, and families being served.

The Peer Navigator needs to be comfortable with public speaking and outreach. This position requires marketing and engagement in various settings and situations. The Peer Navigator needs to be comfortable sharing their own foster care/LGBTQI2-S experience/story as appropriate to educate, advocate, and inspire hope.

Requirements:

  • It is preferred that the Peer Navigator have a minimum of five (5) years' lived expertise as an LGBTQ+ youth in foster care, or five (5) years' experience providing tailored services to LGBTQ+ children, youth, and families, training staff and volunteers on affirming practices as well as best practices for working with LGBTQ+ populations, awareness of LGBTQ+ affirming language and issues unique to LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, supporting caregivers and youth during the coming out process, and overseeing program staff and volunteers.
  • It is preferred that the Peer Navigator have a minimum level of a Bachelor's degree in psychology, child development, social work, sociology, or related field.

  • If applicable, the applicant will submit a letter of interest outlining his or her personal system experience as a youth dealing with formal systems of DCFS. (The DCFS case must be closed for at least 12 months). This letter must also reflect their experience as an LGBTQI2-S youth/young adult.

  • Bilingual Spanish Preferred (Verbal only).

  • Valid California driver's license for at least 5 years; current automobile insurance; have and maintain a clean driving record acceptable to the organization's insurance company; have immediate access to his or her vehicle during work hours.

Position Location: Lancaster, CA

Salary Range: $20.09 up to $29.36 per hour

Additional $1.00 per hour bilingual Spanish differential.
