We are actively seeking On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians in the Southern California Area, including Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange County.

We are also seeking monitors for ongoing, long-term projects in Blythe and Owens Valley, CA to start *immediately!

Who You Are

You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring, surveys and documentation of archaeological, and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements. You live in Northern Orange County or Los Angeles County to support local work. If you are available to travel to remote work locations we will consider candidates from elsewhere in California as well. Potential for travel to Northern California, Nevada, and Arizona.

You hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology/paleontology or related field. You have a demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping.

You are familiar with working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms and are knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region and have a minimum of six months of field experience or relative academic field experience in Southern California.

You enjoy working outside and can walk long distances carrying up to 50lbs of gear in a wide variety of conditions, including strenuous natural habitats and difficult weather. You can work some nights and/or weekends.

You possess a valid CA driver's license and have experience driving 4 wheel-drive vehicles off-road.

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is $22.37 - $31.31/hr or $20.13 - $28.18/hr based on our anticipated hiring location as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to an individual's related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.

What You Will Do for ESA

ESA is looking for Variable Part Time archaeological field technicians to support field projects in Southern California. Qualified candidates can demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring and familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, and interacting with Native American monitors. Successful candidates will fulfill the following duties:

  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological and/or paleontological resources
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel
  • Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications
