Job Description
Associate Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery-CHLA Keck School of Medicine Faculty Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

University of Southern California

The Division of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) are actively seeking a full-time faculty member for the position of Associate Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Surgical Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. The ideal candidate will have experience leading a busy surgical epilepsy program and clinical expertise in epilepsy and functional neurosurgery as well as general pediatric neurosurgical conditions. The surgeon will partner with the Division of Neurology's new Medical Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center to advance the surgical treatment of children with epilepsy at CHLA and create a world class surgical epilepsy program at CHLA.

Candidate must share and demonstrate a personal commitment to CHLA's values of respect, excellence, service, knowledge, and teamwork, which are also values shared by the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Candidates should have strong clinical, research, and leadership experience in a children's hospital and/or academic pediatric department affiliated with a university medical school, with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive experience. Board certification in pediatric neurological surgery is required.

Our four full-time pediatric neurosurgery faculty perform 600-700 operative cases/year for a broad range of neurosurgical conditions. Education of the next generation of pediatric neurosurgeons is an important component of our mission, and we have an accredited pediatric neurosurgical fellowship and host 2-3 rotating neurosurgery residents. We have a full complement of Advanced Practice Providers providing both inpatient and outpatient support to the Division.

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at CHLA is a certified Level 4 Epilepsy Center. Our busy epilepsy surgery program offers ECoG-guided resections, phase II studies with implanted grids/strips and depths, stereo-EEG, EEG source localization and minimally invasive laser ablation. We have a large VNS program and are initiating a pediatric RNS program. CHLA has an active outpatient EEG lab, a dedicated 6-bed pediatric EMU, wired video EEG playroom and neuro-critical care EEG monitoring service.

The Division of Neurosurgery is an integral part of The Neurological Institute at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. In conjunction with the Division of Neurology, The Neurological Institute serves children from newborns to young adults, helping children reach their full neurologic potential. An integrated clinic space for the Divisions of Neurology and Neurosurgery opened in the Spring of 2021 offering comprehensive and integrated outpatient neurologic services in a patient-centered environment. The NI is a preeminent referral center, attracting families from across the country and around the world. Each component of care-from clinical equipment and surgical techniques to psychosocial support and rehabilitation-has been designed with children in mind.

CHLA is a premier pediatric teaching hospital affiliated with USC since 1932, which is the oldest private research university in the Western U.S. and among the top universities in the nation. CHLA has been ranked the No. 1 hospital for children in California, No. 1 in the Western U.S. and a top 10 pediatric hospital in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report.

The annual base salary range for this position is $650,000-$800,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Academic appointment through USC Keck School of Medicine is available at a level appropriate to training and experience. CHLA and USC are equal opportunity, affirmative action employers. The division greatly values diversity and is committed to building a vibrant and culturally diverse community of faculty that best reflects the patients and families that we serve. Individuals from underrepresented groups in medicine are especially encouraged to apply.
