Associate or Professor of Clinical Radiation Oncology/Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs Keck School of Medicine Faculty Los Angeles, California

The Department of Radiation Oncology Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California consists of 16 physician faculty and 10 medical physicist faculty. We provide service at five hospitals, including Keck Hospital of USC, Norris Cancer Center, LAC+USC County Hospital, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Methodist Hospital of Southern California and five community-based clinics. The Department is affiliated with the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program is an affiliate member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and participates in trials sponsored by the South West Oncology Group and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Group, and Gynecology Oncology Group. Our medical physics faculty are directly involved in promoting quality and safety for clinical operations, clinical research, and teaching.

There is an ACGME accredited residency training program based at LAC+USC medical center. The Department at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is equipped with a state-of the art Varian Truebeam STX, a new Varian Truebeam, a Trilogy machine, and a Varisource HDR Brachyhterapy unit. The Keck Hospital houses the Gammaknife Perfexion, as well as programs in episcleral plaque brachytherapy in ocular melanoma.


The Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs must possess excellent leadership, organizational, operational and communication skills and engagement in clinical research and development initiatives. The Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs will be in charge of directing the work of the clinical team, managing and growing our clinical footprint, oversee ongoing quality assurance tasks, improve and enhance the patient experience and promote standardization and consistency in clinical care pathways across Keck Medicine of USC health sciences campus and radiation oncology satellites.

Position Summary

The Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs (Clinical Practice Group and Clinical Enterprise) is responsible for overseeing the clinical enterprise, practice plan administration, community outreach and engagement, and other areas related to operations. The position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Keck School of Medicine of USC and is responsible for assuring optimal financial, clinical, and service quality for the entire radiation oncology clinical enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for strategy, execution, operations and results for all clinical enterprise functions of USC KSOM,(i.e. Clinical Practice Group, Clinical Trials) including main campus, 1206D and Non-1206D clinic satellites.
  • Responsible for operating budget, Profit and Loss and supporting infrastructure for all clinical enterprise activity.
  • Ensure the Clinical Practice Group supports our Keck KNOWN Principles and supports extraordinary teamwork, financial strength, and excellent people culture,
  • Work with the Chair, CFO of Practice Plan, Chiefs and Administrators and other key executives to develop and implement performance-based strategies, programs, and projects that supports service line orientation and evolving funds flow.
  • In coordination with Keck Faculty Affairs and HR, ensure compliance with faculty handbook, assist the Chair with faculty development and mentoring. Promote a positive and supportive workplace environment
  • Oversee and drive improvements in patient experience, patient satisfaction scores and adherence to national guidelines that support superior clinical outcomes. Chair Quality Management Committee and Quarterly Quality Service Committee to review, monitor and improve quality metrics. Improve patient experience by enhancing patient education as well as utilizing digital health platforms where possible
  • Responsible for the oversight, and selection of studies for inclusion in Clinical Trials research portfolio, ceded IRBs, deployment of research protocols and clinical and translational research projects in the satellite setting.
  • Co-develop dashboard that will allow all physicians, supervisors, and chair to understand physician-specific, clinic-specific, and department-specific productivity including: clinical revenues, clinical billings, wRVUs, patient satisfaction, direct and indirect expenses, days to next available appointment, and other key measures. The dashboard will support physician and clinic accountability and the physician compensation program.
  • Lead and organize negotiations for various clinical related programs, initiatives and contracts including managed care payers, and other health system partners.
  • Review and optimize clinical operations to decrease costs and/or improve quality of the clinical practice. Proactive and efficiently develop and monitor physician staffing models to ensure coverage of all hospital and satellites. Oversee and monitor day to day coverage needs proactively and manage urgent coverage needs for all sites. Effectively leverage current infrastructure and develop a thoughtful plan for evolving infrastructure and org chart to ensure scalability in anticipation of future continued growth
  • Serve as Director of Quality for Keck Medicine for the Department of Radiation Oncology and reporting to Keck Medicine CMO in this role
  • Present as the face of the clinical enterprise, managing messaging to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to and actively support the five-year institutional strategic planning exercise and link radiation oncology to the Health Systems strategic plan and Strategic Roadmap.
  • Support IT infrastructure strategy that supports robust and reliable clinical service delivery, growth and scalability across all sites.
  • Improve the capabilities at all levels of the organization through assessment and fostering professional development of existing people and the recruitment of new talent.
  • Lead creation of inorganic growth strategy working with USC Strategy office taking into account market share, regulatory and competitive landscape
  • Support our Keck Medicine code of conduct, values and professionalism standards
  • Provide expert, reliable and confidential counsel and guidance to faculty and internal and external stakeholders.,

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board Certified Physician (MD or DO); California Medical License, ABR certification
  • Associate Professor or Professor Level
  • 10+ years clinical practice experience in a complex academic medical center with leadership experience
  • Demonstrated ability to execute on tactics, strategies, and institutional initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant progressive higher education experience that includes administrative experience in the area of academic leadership, preferably in an academic medical center or NCI-designated cancer center.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the recruitment, and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Academic track record and previous faculty teaching experience that merit an appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in an academic unit within a university.
  • Possesses a record of execution and leadership around institutional strategic planning for academic activities.
