| Specific Responsibilities: | Responsibilities: -Month/Quarter End Close: Assists in the monthly and quarterly financial close process and owns specific close activities; Related activities include: co-ordination and information gathering from business owners in order to prepare close analyses and entries; performance of quarterly and annual true-up procedures; preparation/compilation of schedules to be incorporated into Gilead's SEC filings; and preparation and support for schedules to be provided to Gilead's external auditors related to quarterly reviews and audit testing. -Accounting/Analysis: Ensures business transactions continue to be in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles; Related activities include: monthly monitoring of Foster City general ledger accounts; completion of general ledger reconciliations and follow-up on outstanding reconciling items; and compilation of presentation materials for internal management reporting. -Internal Control Compliance: Ensures that any issues related to Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance are addressed timely and remediated. Works closely with the internal financial compliance team in preparing schedules for internal Sarbanes-Oxley testing and providing support. Ensures that day-to-day accounting is consistent with Gilead's corporate accounting policies and procedures as defined by the Corporate Controller's Manual. -Process Improvement: Drives discussion and action in improving existing accounting processes; Related activities include: exploration of ways to automate existing manual processes; teaming with other process participants to explore executable improvements and carry out project plan; and participation in cross-training with other senior accountants. -Works closely with Corporate and Cost Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, operating departments, management, and internal/external auditors. Flexible in participating in ad hoc special projects. -Primary duties include: Stock Option expense Accounting/Forecasting 30% Hedge Accounting (FAS 133) 30% R&D accrual support and ownership 30% Tax Cost Sharing support 5% Ad Hoc projects 5% Stock Option Expense Accounting: On a monthly and quarterly basis, this position would be responsible for recording, reviewing and forecasting stock option expense. This position would work closely with the stock administration and FP&A groups to ensure accuracy of the entries. Hedge Accounting: On a monthly and quarterly basis, this position would be responsible for recording and reviewing the Treasury hedging entries. This position would work closely with the Treasury group to ensure accuracy of the hedging entries. R&D accrual support and ownership: On a monthly and quarterly basis, this position would be responsible for recording and reviewing accruals for the Cardiovascular therapeutic areas. This position would work closely with the R&D FP&A and clinical groups to record accurate accruals and provide information for quarterly latest estimates. As part of this process, balance sheet reconciliations, E&Y PBC schedules, SEC schedules and Internal audit support will part of the responsibilities. Tax Cost Sharing support: On a quarterly basis, this position would be responsible for recording and reviewing the cost sharing entries and invoices. This position would work closely with the Tax department to ensure the accuracy of the cost sharing entries. Ad Hoc projects: On a periodic basis, this position would work closely with other Corporate Accounting members to complete Ad Hoc projects as necessary. | Essential Duties and Job Functions: | Performs and possibly supervises accounting functions and preparation of reports and statistics detailing financial results. Coordinates schedules, activities and reports with other departments. Establishes and maintains operating procedures within the context of existing internal controls and company policies. May specialize in one or more functional areas such as general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, cost accounting etc. Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation of journal entries (with appropriate supporting documentation) for the month end close and accounting transactions. Maintains, reconciles and resolves P&L and balance sheet ledger accounts. Responsible for preparing analysis and schedules for local management as well as internal and external auditors. Frequently interacts with peers, outside customers and functional group members at various management levels. Interaction normally requires the ability to gain cooperation of others, conducting presentations or providing technical information concerning specific projects. Coordinates a multi-task accounting team to fulfill the accounting and reporting requirements under U.S. and local GAAP, including statutory reporting and tax declarations. Implements and maintains accounting systems, policies and procedures including compliance with worldwide Controller’s manual and adapts to local use where necessary. |
| Knowledge, Experience and Skills: | Typically requires either a BA or BS degree in accounting or equivalent and 4 years of relevant experience. An MBA/CPA/Chartered Accountant qualification is preferred. Experience in biotech or pharmaceuticals industry a plus. Experience in multi-national organization a plus. At US and non-US sites, proficiency in written and verbal English is required. Strong interpersonal and communications skills are required. Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills are required. Working knowledge and experience of JD Edwards or similar integrated software product is necessary. Proficiency with Microsoft tools (Excel, Outlook, and Word) required. Must be able to apply accounting knowledge to day-to-day operations and assigned projects. Ability to formulate strategies and identify trends through analysis of various data. Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing, fast paced environment. Proven analytical ability and creative problem solving skills. Detail oriented with strong organizational skills. Must be fluent in English (written and spoken) |
