USC'sInformation Sciences Institute (ISI), ("Institute"), a unit of the university's Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, information processing, computing, microelectronics, cybersecurity, and communications technologies. ISI's 400 faculty, professional staff and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations - Marina Del Rey, CA; Arlington, VA; and Waltham, MA.

The SPHERE Project:

The Security and Privacy Heterogeneous Environment for Reproducible Experimentation (SPHERE) is a newly funded NSF mid-scale research infrastructure being built by USC Information Sciences Institute and Northeastern University. SPHERE will offer access to an unprecedented variety of hardware, all relevant to cybersecurity and privacy research, connected by user-configurable network substrate, and protected by a set of security policies uniquely aligned with cybersecurity and privacy research needs.

SPHERE has a dedicated staff of research engineers and operators. We are looking to hire a systems administrator II to help us build this innovative cyberinfrastructure. This is a unique opportunity for someone to join our vibrant team and work on groundbreaking research in supporting scalable, large-scale virtualization on diverse hardware.

*This position's location is in Marina del Rey, CA. This role is 100% onsite with a potential of going hybrid within the 18-to-24-month mark*

Job Accountabilities:

  • Develops and deploys documentation for systems administration and troubleshooting procedures, as and general-purpose documentation for end-users.
  • Troubleshoots and identifies hardware and software problems in a timely manner; resolves routine problems, replaces defective components and researches resources to identify solutions. Refers more complex problems to appropriate staff for resolution.
  • Monitors Linux systems, servers and auxiliary devices for performance and security.
  • Performs data backups and disaster recovery operations. Repairs and/or recovers systems.
  • Assigns, modifies, and deletes user accounts and resolves security access problems; maintains integrity of the security system.
  • Installs, configures, and tests computer hardware, networking hardware and software, and operating system software.
  • Installs, tests, implements, and assists the SPHERE team with the implementation of new hardware, software, and applications.
  • Maintains and administers computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
  • Automates repetitive tasks, optimizes software pipelines.
  • Efficiently manages physical assets as necessary, including documenting, transportation, replacement, labeling, and cabling.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in supervising administrative operations of a multi-faceted department
  • Proven experience with Linux and Open Source Tools
  • Possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Have a passion for the hardware side of IT
  • A self-starter, resourceful and able to work both independently and with a team
  • Proficient in Gitlab/Github
  • Participated in code reviews, hacking/capture the flag type events
  • Virtualization experience
  • Networking experience
  • Configuration automation tools (puppet/chef/salt/ansible)
  • Familiarity with server hardware & asset management
  • Customer relations/support with a cheerful disposition
  • Understanding of and ability to work within a devops paradigm
  • The incumbent must be able to lift 50 pounds on a consistent basis

The hourly rate range for this position is $41.70 - $46.72.
