Agency Overview

As a component of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) oversees lawful immigration to the United States and the U.S. naturalization process. The USCIS Field Operations Directorate (FOD) manages 88 field offices nationwide (including U.S. territories), in which immigration benefit applicants are interviewed and requests for benefits are adjudicated. Most field offices are comprised of Federal adjudication and records support positions. In larger offices, clerical support is to be provided by a mixture of Federal and contract staff. The Field Office Support Services (FOSS) contract provides contract clerical staff to ensure that USCIS is prepared to handle application and petition volumes. The workload in each field office can be significantly impacted by extraordinary events, as well as new legislation that may result in an increased number of filings for immigration benefits.
